Hello, friends.

If we haven't had the chance to sit down over a cup of coffee yet, my name is Elena Sterling, and I serve as a senior minister here at the Universal Community Union.

Lately, many newcomers have asked me the same beautiful question: “Elena, I love the energy here, but what do we actually stand for? What is the baseline philosophy that guides this union?”

When people hear the word "minister" or think of a spiritual assembly, they often expect a rigid, heavy creed—a list of dogmas you have to promise to believe unquestioningly just to get through the front door. But if you’ve spent any time with us, you know our organization does things a bit differently.

We don't hand you a cage of rules. Instead, we share a living, breathing set of guiding principles called our Ten Tenets of Belief. To make them easy to keep close to your heart during a frantic week, we’ve streamlined them into a simple, unforgettable acronym: C.O.M.P.A.S.S.I.O.N.

The C.O.M.P.A.S.S.I.O.N. Framework

Here is a look at our ten core pillars and how we strive to live them out every single day:

1. Critical Thinking & Reason

  • What it means: We embrace reason and critical thinking as essential intellectual tools for understanding our world.

  • In daily life: We pursue scientific literacy and disciplined inquiry to help us better comprehend our existence and address the actual challenges we face.

2. Open Inquiry & Expression

  • What it means: We champion the absolute freedom to question, explore, and speak openly.

  • In daily life: We protect an environment of open dialogue, ensuring everyone can share creative, civic, or spiritual insights without fear of community retribution.

3. Mind & Body Stewardship

  • What it means: Taking active, intentional responsibility for our personal well-being.

  • In daily life: This means holding the stewardship of our minds and bodies as a core belief—prioritizing mental health, getting regular medical check-ups, and investing energy into our physical fitness and therapy when needed.

4. Pursuit of Happiness & Dignity

  • What it means: Affirming the inherent dignity and worth of every single human being.

  • In daily life: We embrace a human-centered worldview that respects unique life experiences, values individual contributions, and actively strives to maximize the comfort and enjoyment of our members.

5. Adaptation & Learning

  • What it means: Recognizing that human understanding of the world is a constant journey, not a fixed destination.

  • In daily life: We stay open to new insights and evolving perspectives, remaining completely willing to adapt our views as our collective knowledge grows.

6. Social Justice & Equity

  • What it means: Standing up firmly against discrimination, oppression, and systemic unfairness.

  • In daily life: We work toward a world where everyone can live with dignity, which means using our collective voice to oppose the abuse of power and rejecting intolerant viewpoints entirely.

7. Shared Community & Connection

  • What it means: Valuing deep, collaborative human relationships as the glue that keeps us whole.

  • In daily life: We cultivate a welcoming, affirming environment through shared experiences, making it a habit to express explicit gratitude to the workers, family members, and neighbors who help us build our lives.

8. Inclusivity & Diversity

  • What it means: Actively celebrating the rich, vibrant spectrum of human differences.

  • In daily life: Our union thrives because we intentionally welcome and respect people of all cultures, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and varying belief systems.

9. Outward Empathy & Conduct

  • What it means: Grounding our daily moral principles in active compassion and emotional intelligence.

  • In daily life: This means practicing deep, non-judgmental listening to understand others' circumstances and stepping up to offer comfort and relief to anyone experiencing hardship or isolation.

10. Naturalistic Transcendence

  • What it means: Finding the profound and the sacred right here in the natural world and the human condition.

  • In daily life: Embracing a naturalistic worldview, we find true meaning in art, human creativity, deep relationships, and the beautiful, ordinary moments of everyday life.

Direction, Not Perfection

Here is what I want you to remember above all else: these tenets are stars to navigate by, not stones to throw.

As a minister, my job isn't to police your lifestyle or hand down judgment if you have a rough day and fall short of these ideals. We are a wonderfully human organization, which means we are beautifully imperfect.

We don't offer punishment or exclusion here. We offer a hand to help you back up. These ten principles simply give us a shared map for our journey. Whenever you need a quick alignment check this week, just remember to check your C.O.M.P.A.S.S.I.O.N.

Peace and warmth,

Elena Sterling
